Beginning band is a class for 6th grade students that meets within the school day. No prior musical knowledge is required to be a part of this class. However, band is only offered to beginners in 6th grade. Therefore, if a child is interested in being a part of the band program, now is the time to get signed up for the class.
Getting signed up....
Make sure that you completed your registration for classes and circled the band option. If you didn't do this, it's not too late! Just make sure that you come to instrument try-outs. Those dates will be publicized at LOI in March. If you feel you may have missed some information, please feel free to contact Mrs. Connell or the LOMS counselors.
Our band class is separated into brass and woodwind classes. These classes meet separately but perform together on concerts. As sixth grade students we have 2 concert events every year: A Holiday concert in December and a Spring concert in May. Because our class is taught within the school day there are very few conflicts with band for middle school students. Therefore, band does not conflict with any other activities.
How do we select an instrument to play?
Students are encouraged to choose 3 instruments to try on selection night. Often times, facial features unique to the student will make them better suited for certain instruments. Please know that not everyone can play percussion or saxophone. Please be open to other options.
Instruments to choose from: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Percussion. Bassoon, Oboe and French Horn are instruments that are sometimes a challenge for beginners. These instruments are still available to try out, but become much easier to learn if you already have a musical background. Please let Mrs. Connell know that you have had piano lessons or have been involved in other music classes.
Getting an Instrument...
Being in band is an investment in your child. It is an investment of time and money. None of the instruments are free. So there is some expense involved. If finances are a concern, please take the time to talk with Mrs. Connell. Sometimes there are options we can suggest that are more cost efficient than others. Our school offers a rental program through Amro Music. It is an option for you as a parent, but not a requirement. There will be more information available about rental night before school begins. Please understand that a child can not be successful in Band with an instrument that is not well maintained. Please take the time to make sure the instrument you have is in good playing condition.
